Luxury vinyl plank is the pragmatic favourite: fully waterproof, comfortable to stand on for an hour, forgiving when a pan lands on it, and the cheapest of the genuinely durable options. Porcelain tile is the most durable and the most heat and water resistant, but it is hard underfoot and unforgiving of dropped glassware. Engineered hardwood works if you want real wood and will wipe spills promptly.
Laminate is the one to think hardest about. It is affordable and scratch resistant, but its fibreboard core swells permanently if water sits at a seam, and the kitchen is where that happens.

Most kitchen floor failures we are called to look at start at the dishwasher. A slow leak runs under the unit where nobody sees it for months. With tile or LVP that is an inconvenience. With laminate or solid wood it is a replacement. If you are choosing laminate for a kitchen, go in knowing that.

Appliance disconnection and reconnection, subfloor levelling if the room needs it, and transitions where the kitchen meets an adjoining floor. None of these are large individually and all of them are real. A written quote should list them rather than folding them into a single figure.
