Luxury vinyl tile is LVP’s square-format sibling: the same waterproof construction, printed and textured to read as stone, slate or ceramic rather than wood. It is warmer underfoot than real tile, more forgiving if something is dropped on it, and it can be grouted if you want the look to be convincing at close range.
LVT shows subfloor imperfection more readily than plank formats, because the eye follows a grid and any dip in the floor breaks the line. We flatten properly before laying rather than trusting the tile to bridge it, and we dry-lay the pattern so cuts fall sensibly at the edges of the room instead of leaving a sliver against the most visible wall.
Installed LVT runs $5 to $11 per square foot here, the same range as luxury vinyl plank, covering material and installation. Grouted installations sit at the upper end because of the extra labour. Where you land depends mainly on wear layer thickness and whether the subfloor needs levelling work before we start.
Real tile is harder, will outlast LVT, and is the better choice if you want a floor that never needs replacing. LVT is warmer underfoot, quieter, considerably cheaper to install, does not crack if the subfloor moves slightly, and goes down in a fraction of the time. In a bathroom you plan to keep for twenty years, tile. In a laundry, basement or rental, LVT usually makes more sense.
Yes, with certain products. Grouted LVT uses a flexible acrylic grout in a narrow joint, and at normal viewing distance it is genuinely difficult to tell from ceramic. It adds cost and installation time, and it reintroduces grout maintenance you chose LVT partly to avoid. Most clients skip it; those who grout are usually matching an adjoining real tile floor.
Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms and finished basements, which is to say everywhere water is likely. Because it is fully waterproof and installs below grade without concern, LVT solves the basement problem that stone and wood both struggle with. It is also a common choice in commercial settings replacing VCT, since it removes the strip-and-wax cycle entirely.
Format, essentially. LVP is plank-shaped and printed to look like wood; LVT is tile-shaped and printed to look like stone or ceramic. The core construction, waterproofing and wear layers are the same technology. Choose by the look you want.
With a commercial-grade wear layer in a residential setting, twenty years or more is realistic. Wear layer thickness matters far more than brand. Manufacturer warranties vary by product line and we will show you the actual warranty for whatever you pick.
No, and this is one of the main reasons people choose it. The vinyl core does not conduct heat away from your feet the way porcelain or stone does, so it feels noticeably warmer in a bathroom on a winter morning. It also works over radiant heat within the manufacturer temperature limits.
Often yes, if the existing tile is sound, fully bonded and the grout lines are not too deep. Deep grout joints telegraph through and need filling first. We check this at the estimate, because skipping it is what causes visible lines in a new floor a few months later.
