A bathroom floor is a waterproofing job with a tile finish on top. What you can see is the least important part of it. The failures we are called to fix are almost never the tile itself, they are what happened beneath it at the perimeter, at the shower, and where the floor meets the wall.
Bathrooms are small, which tempts people to treat them as quick jobs. They are the room where a shortcut costs the most, because a slow leak works into the subfloor and the joists before anyone notices a problem. We waterproof to the manufacturer specification, use movement joints where the floor meets walls and fixtures, and do not rush the cure.
Tile, which is what most bathrooms get, runs $10 to $25 per square foot installed. Bathrooms are small, so the square footage is modest, but the cost per square foot sits higher than an open room because of the cutting around fixtures, the waterproofing, and the number of edges. Luxury vinyl tile at $5 to $11 is a legitimate lower-cost alternative that is fully waterproof and warmer underfoot.
Tile slip resistance is measured as DCOF, the dynamic coefficient of friction, and the benchmark under ANSI A137.1 for level interior floors expected to get wet is a minimum of 0.42. A polished tile that grips fine when dry can fall well below that wet, which matters enormously in a bathroom and matters more in a household with children or older relatives. Ask for the figure. Almost always at a junction: the perimeter where floor meets wall, the threshold of the shower, and around the toilet flange. Rigid grout in a joint that needs to move will crack, water follows the crack, and the subfloor absorbs it quietly for months. The fix is unglamorous: flexible sealant where movement happens, proper waterproofing membrane, and a correctly set flange height. None of it is visible in the finished room, which is exactly why it gets skipped.
A bathroom is the single best room in the house for radiant floor heat, because the floor is tile, the room is small, and stepping onto a warm floor on a January morning in New Jersey is the most noticeable comfort upgrade in the house. It has to be planned before tiling, since the system goes in underneath. If you are retiling anyway, it is the cheapest time you will ever get it.
A standard bathroom floor is typically two to three days: substrate prep and waterproofing, setting the tile, then grouting the following day once the mortar has cured. Rebuilding a shower pan adds a further two to three days. Anyone promising a tiled bathroom floor in one day is skipping a cure.
Yes, genuinely. Rigid-core LVT and LVP are fully waterproof, warmer underfoot than porcelain, softer if something is dropped, and considerably cheaper to install. Tile will outlast it and is the better long-term choice for a main bathroom, but vinyl is a sound decision for a powder room, a rental, or a budget-conscious refit.
In this part of New Jersey it is usually mineral deposit from hard water rather than dirt, which is why scrubbing harder does not solve it. Your water utility publishes an annual water quality report that tells you what is actually in your supply. Epoxy grout or a high-performance cement grout with a sealer resists it far better than standard grout.
